heart

3-10
"Forthwith a change came over the waters, and the serenity became less brilliant but more profound" (4-5)

nature will be helping them throughout there jouney. also the nature will make the tone on their trip.

"but tere was one yet-the biggest, the most blank, so to speak-tat i had a hankering after"
-there is an unknown, uncharted place that he is wanting to explore it...i wonder what it is....he wants to fullfill his dream and make maps, fill them up with lakes, rivers, and names.

11-18
"the grass growing through his ribs was tall enough to hide his bones(13)
-They think of him as a supernatural being. His dark soul came up a couple times which connects it to the theme with having a heart of darkness.

"i was going into the yellow. Dead in the centre. and the river was there-facinating-deadly-like a snake"
-he talks about the river. the congo river being yellow and dead. he could not stop staring at the river. you want to look away but you cant

19-25
"its queer how out of touch with truth women are. they live in a world of their own, and there has never been anything like it, and never can be. it is too beautiful altogether, and if they were to set it up it would go to pieves before the first sunset. some confounded fact we men have been living contentedly with ever since the day of creation would start up and knock the whole thing over"
-I think he is sexist. he is saying woman lie a lot. they live in their own world. they do what they want. but he is saying its beautiful. also that if they were to embrace it it wouldnt last for even a day.

"six black men advanced in a file, toiling up the path"
looks like our friend here has met some new friends. they seem to be local natives.

26-33
"They were dying slowly- it was very clear. they were not enemies, they were not criminals, they were nothing earthly now-nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation.
-he says the natives are slowly dying off. they did not act badly toward the new comers. they look zombie like

"bundles of acute angles sat with their legs drawn up"
the acute angles refer to the other men cuddles up suffering like they overcame a great weariness

34-41
-"the silent wilderness surrounding this cleared speck in the earth struck me as something great and invincible, like evil or truth, waiting patently for the passing away of this fantastic invasion."
-he sees his surrounding as "invincilbe' like evil or truth. even though it is as small as a speck it is something great and intreaging. he sinks in this image by patiently passing time. marlow maybe thinks that they are truth

"draped blindfolded carrying a lighted torch. The background was somber – almost black”
-there is a picture that marlow is describing about a woman walking around blindfolded. Maybe this is how marlow feels, that he his jounry all he has been doing is walking around doing nothing. Then the black represents death, and evil. Marlow is surrounded by it just like the woman in the painting.

42-49
"Beyond the fence the forest stood up spectrally in the moonlight, and through the dim stir, through the faint sounds of that lamentalbe courtyard, the silence of the land went home to one's very heart--its mystery, its greatness, the amazing reality of its concealed life."
-The narrator describes the landscape. Makes me visualize what it will be like at midnight in the forest/jungle. He also describes it in a postive way. Very calm and relazing, but it also has some secrets too. Its (concealed life)

"Your own reality--for yourself, not for others--what no other man can ever know. They can only see the mere show, and never can tell what it really means."
-this is sorta like a life lesson in my opinion. Your own reality would your way of life what goes on everyday. Its for you, not for anyone else, and no one can take it away. The people can only see the "Show" which i guess is your mere image of yourself, and only you know what it is and whats inside.

50-58
"We penetrated deeper and deeper into the heart of darkeness"
-getting deeper and deeper into Africa! and it connects to the title. the heart is africa i am guessing and darkness is some sort of evil.

59-66
"Just nowhere. Gone, Disappeared; swept off without leaving a whisper or a shadow behind."
it felt like they were nowhere. in the middle of nowhere. its like they vanished without leaving a -trace behind. i think they are lost.

67-74
"yes i looked at them as you would on any human being, with a curiosity of their impulses, motives, capacities, weaknesses, when brought to the test of an inexorable physical necessity."
im guessing he is describing the natives. and he says he looks at them as if he would look at a human being. racist, judging them. he didnt see them as people before but now he does.

75-83
"I laid the ghost of his gifts at last with a lie."
-ghost gifts like invisible gifts. or that are meaning less. like lies.

84-91
"Poor fool! If he had only left that shutter alone. He had no restraint, no restraint-just like Kurtz-a trees swayed by the wind."
-they always judge and need to feel superior. its like that today too.

92-99
"it echoes loudly within him because he was hollow at the core...."
he is empty. his heart it nothing.

100-108
"stretcher, natives, bows, spears, arrows, shields"
he is protected like he is part of the tribe, family. He is greatly admired by everyone.

109-117
